I'm in high school and currently in year 9. I'm a smart person in my opinion, people say i'm intelligent and i do well in class. But sometimes when it comes to exams i just don't get the mark i expected. I mean i've never failed but i get 80-90% It may sound all right to you but i want to do better i mean over 90% thats all i want.

Now the obvious problem here is that i'm not studying effectively, by saying this i mean that i just can't concentrate and i don't know how to revise properly on the notes in my books.

So basically i need tips on studying and how to do it more effectively. I'd be very grateful to you all if you could help me out. Thnx :P

P.S. I wan't to take doctor as a profession.

  1. go out on weekends

  2. You just need to practise studying.

Read as much as you can, but keep going over things.

Make sure you take breaks to keep your mind fresh.

Do it for fun and you'll soon know it all off by heart.

Revising never works in my opinion, you should already know your stuff! It should be your normal reading material.

Oh and if you want to study medicine you need to be tip top at physics, chemistry and maths. So make sure you work really hard at your sciences.

You could also look into what colleges have to offer as something extra for you to study, or distance learning colleges. Medicine is competitive.

    Anyway, lots of luck.

  3. Good on you for wanting to improve.  Here's some tips:

    1.   Work out what works for you.

Do a chart of roughly what you do with each hour of each day.  Think about the easiest time to study and the easiest place to study.  Think about how to protect that time and place so you actually get the study done and not get distracted.  Aim for just a little bit more than you currently do, maybe just 10-15 minutes/week for the first few weeks, then shift up to 15-20 minutes for the next couple weeks, etc.

    2.  No new years resolutions.

A big bang approach works about as well as a fad diet, ie. not at all.  It's not how much study you fit into one week that counts, it's how many weeks you do just a little bit more.  Start with small, easy changes to your lifestyle.

    3.  Make it fun.

That sounds a little crazy, but it's worth it.  Take some time with a good friend to figure out more enjoyable ways to study.  Studying with a friend can be great incentive, then do a reward activity together.  Warning: Study with a friend can be great, but study with 3 friends usually doesn't work at all.  ;-)

    4.  Plan ... again and again.

Work out the best things you can study in a short space of time.  If you're not sure, ask another student that you know is good at studying (which is not necessarily the one that scores the highest).  Tell the teacher that you're putting 10 more minutes into your study schedule, and what do they think would be the best thing to study with that time.

    5.  Set a time-limit.

It can be a real drag trying to hit some kind of vague productivity goal before you stop.  Instead, set a stop watch, and see how much you can get done in just 15 minutes on a subject.

    6.  Reward yourself for hitting your harder goals.

Find some rewards that mean alot to you.  Miss the goal, no reward; Hit the goal, make sure you get that reward straight away.  Reward motivation has to be immediate and your subconscious has to trust that it's real.  Your parents might help you with some rewards if you tell them what you're doing!

Study is like diet and exercise, it's not just something you do, it's a habit that becomes part of your lifestyle.  Men are made or broken by their habits.

BTW, a doctor studies twice as long as many other professions, and then they have to study for the rest of their lives to keep up to date!

  4. a good way to study more effectively is to go out on weekends and get smashed

that way, during school days your too exhausted to do anything but sit down and read

  5. Here's a tip - but it's only if you're serious as a heart attack (now don't go having heart attacks) but, if you want that high mark, you're going to have to devote your time to studying. Now, it may sound tedious, but if you want a high mark, you have to put in the effort. Now, it really depends on what subject, because each one is handled differently. But, for instance, for your English class, since usually you have tests on literature stuff, read the poem, novel several times. Make outlines of what you read, notes. Understand the plot and the characters. For math, study as you learn the new material. Basically, as soon as you learn the new information apply it and practice it. Don't wait till the day of to start studying and cramming, that's not good if you want over 90%.
