Look for your state housing finance agency or development corporation. They are often a great source of grants.

You could also try calling some Realtors that specializ in low income and first time home buyers and call some local banks as they may have grants available through the Federal Home Loan Bank, etc.

There are not many to apply for, but a few for non-profit organizations for very specific groups.

You can find the grants and instructions (each grant will have different instructions) at http://www.grants.gov

The site is free and maintained by the government.
