How can i attach my external hard drive to my wireless router so that i can access it wirelessly.

The hard drive currently connects to my computer via USB. Is there a cheap option ie a cable which will do this.

I suggest the Linksys NSLU2 on ebay...its really cheap.....

If want NTFS read and write access, you will need to flash the device with linux and install ntsf 3g.

Step1

Purchase a middle manager that works with your computer's operating system. Products like Linksys' Network Storage Link or D-Link's Wireless Network Storage Enclosure make connecting your external hard drive to your router easier than ever.

Step2

Gather and connect all necessary connecting cables. You need an Ethernet cable to go from the box linking the hard drive to your wireless router in one of the open ports on the back of your wireless router, and a USB cord connecting your external drive to the storage link box (unless you are using a flash memory device or stick drive).

Power up the devices. Make sure your Internet connection Is working and that the storage device is working properly.

Insert the Setup CD into your computer. Run any necessary executables provided on the disk. Follow the instructions and install any necessary utilities for the specific type of external drive you are using. For example, there may be a special utility for flash drives. The disk should automatically detect the necessary device.

Step5

Configure the storage link. During setup you should have been given the option to secure the device with a login name and password. Open the device and log in. Make any changes you want to on the storage device, but if you aren't sure what specific changes you want to make to the default settings, leave the default settings alone to avoid creating problems.

A router is just a traffic cop. There is no way for it to recognize an external hard drive without a processor and all the necessary driver instructions.

It may be accessable only when connected to a computer.

Depends on the router.  If you have a netgear WGT643 router, just plug it in the USB port and configure the router to share the drive.  If you don't have a router that has a USB port or that is capable of sharing a network drive (NAS) then I would put it on a computer and share it to your wireless network.

The only thing that would work is probably having a computer on the home network connected to the hard drive and just set its properties to file sharing.....either that or just get a media server
