  1. I don't think that there's anything you can do, sorry. Whenever I get approached in the street I know that the cheerful banter and questions about my day are just leading up to the ultimate question for money (one-off cash payments or even less popular: direct debits). People get approached constantly and that's why they are sick of it and react defensively. I find it especially annoying that it is always the normal, less well-off people who get targeted because they are known to be more helpful cos they know what it's like not to have much but never those manager types or businesses. I know that's not necessarily your fault, but that's still the case nonetheless.

The best thing you could do is come up with catchy statements about your charity or asking people whether they care about the cause and would like to help out. Like this you don't waste your time and conversation skills on people who have no interest whatsoever in giving money/time, whatever and are just to polite or shy to brush you off from the start. Especially when looking in the charity sector there are a lot more fulfilling jobs thn fundraising in high streets.

  2. I work in a London borough doing home visits so I spend my day going from home to home by bus and on foot. I am accosted on a daily basis, often several times a day, by the "chuggers" (charity muggers) and I find myself getting quite stressed by their advances.

I work for a disabled children's charity and I am the parent of a son with autism and moderate learning difficulties so I do understand the issues involved. I just think that there has to be a better way to raise funds!
