There are several ways to approach the situation. 1. You can negotiate with the creditor and set up a payment schedule. The creditor may even agree to lower the amount.  2. You can declare bankruptcy and the balance may be forgiven by the court. 3. You can ignore the whole thing and it will go away in about ten years. During the 10 years you will most likely be hounded by a series of collection agencies and may have a judgement entered against you. Depending on where you live you may have your wages garnished to pay the balance.
