  1. go to the ymca or any place that has swimming lessons and take the course for lifeguard or ask witch ones are needed to be one then they give you a certificate thing. then you can apply for jobs as a lifeguard, like a public pool or something

  2. OK so since you're not talking about Red Cross, I'm going to assume your talking about Ellis. The normal Ellis training course is about 3 days(usually Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and a total of 26 hours for the three days. The first day will be intro and then you'll go into things like scanning, accountability, and professionalism. Then you'll start individual CPR and do that for the rest of the time. The next day you will probably continue with a CPR review and then group CPR with all the equipment (BVM, V-Vac, high flow Oxygen). Next will be the fitness requirements for a pool its swim 200m with out stopping, get a brick 10lb from 12ft down, tread water for 2 minutes with your hands over your head. If you pass all of those then you will start learning all of the water rescue techniques (actives, unconscious extractions with CPR, spinal extractions). That will probably take you to the end of the second day. The third day you will start with a review of EVERYTHING that you have done so far that will take a while, then you will take your water tests. After that you will probably go over first aid for a while and then you will watch the movie toutched by a drowning (it's ment to scare you, but it's funny) After all of that you will take the written test...IT is HARD, they just changed it this year and most of our new guards did not pass and one of our managers almost did not pass..so STUDY. After or before that you will test out of individual CPR. Remember just because you passed the written test does not mean that the instructor has to pass you, if they don't feel comfortable passing you they won't. If you fail the test you can retake it at a later date, I can't remember what the stipulations were, but that's not the end if you fail. Please take this all very seriously, I like to joke around at training, but don't have an attitude, keep in mind that you will at one point probably have to use this stuff. Be on time and have all of the things you will need. This course is difficult and we throw a lot at you in one weekend, but remember with in-service training  you will be able to do this stuff in your sleep. Just keep in mind that this is not a blow off its SERIOUS.
