  1. Many of the most desired private schools have 5 or more (sometimes many more) applicants for each student space. They cannot take all applicants because there is not enough space. Since Stony Brook takes students from many states and international students, they likely have more than 5 applicants per space.

Often in the first year of a school (7th at SB) there are many siblings of current students or legacies (family went to school) taking spaces. Then there are not very many openings available in the other grades, usually only when someone moves away.

Often schools have "feeder" schools, where two schools have a relationship and the elementary school feeds into the jr/high school. They usually take quite a few applicants from their feeder school.

There are just too many students trying to get into the good private schools. The best thing to do is to speak to the admissions director and ask if there is a reason why you weren't admitted. Perhaps you need to raise your grades or test scores. But chances are there are many other students just like you who didn't get in just because there aren't enough spaces.

  2. You should ask the principal, or admissions department of the school.  It could be a matter of full classes, many private schools have lower caps on the amounts of students they allow in one class.  Are there exceptionalities involved (special needs, giftedness...)  Sometimes private schools do not have the ability to take on exceptional students, especially smaller schools.
