  1. Travel in a small group. Two are safer than one, but I think six is maybe the upper limit.

Have a flexible wardrobe - dress to blend in as much as possible.

Keep your valuables in a pouch inside your clothing, but keep some money available so you can get to it easily without digging around inside your clothing and so you have some sacrificial goods to give up in case you're accosted.

Stay straight/sober - nothing says "target" more than someone who's already messed up.

Try not to stray outside the areas that have people moving around. Darker neighborhoods with few people on the streets are not the kind of place you want to be if you don't know the area.

Do some research, including your country's State Department or equivalent advisories.

I think the rest of it gets kind of specific, like what country/city, what nationality are you, will it be urban or rural, etc. Health measures can be a subject all on its own, depending on where you're going. Be aware of the political and law enforcement environment where you're going - things can be very, very different.

  2. Depends on where you're going and what you intend to do. Don't be loud and rude when overseas and stick out like a sore thumb. Keep your money/passport on you at all times. Know where the police boxes are nearest to you and your hotel and for God's sake, don't drink the water in Mexico.

Other than that, if you're European you've already got one leg up on most Americans in being able to be unnoticeable.

  3. Do not show off the fact that you have valuables

like cameras etc. When you are on a train try to blend in and not speak too much so no one knows that you are a tourist. Keep you wallet and bags close to you, even put a pad lock on your bag if you carry it on your back.

Don't trust anyone, their scams are good and they know the area better then you so they can take advantage.

Just be smart and have a good time!

  4. Travel smart, make an effort to speak some of the language, be kind and considerate of others and you'll be fine.

  5. health wise, depends where you're heading, certain parts of asia, africa, jabs for malaria, flu, etc are required, check with the embassy's concerned, physically, common sense! common sense! & common sense!, do not 1) draw attention to yourself, 2) critised your host country, 3) enter dark narrow alleys, 3) flashed your wads of money & expensive jewllery

be 1) aware of wherever you are,  2) always carry the hotel card with address with you,  3) keep copies of your passport in different place, 4) keep copies of your importain phone nos, credit nos, etc, & those i've missed & you've thought of
