  1. Write the credit bureau and ask them for a debt validation ...they have 30 days to repond. Don't pay anyone until you know for sure.

And then get a pay for delete before coughing up payment to.

  2. Debt validation.

  3. You are correct to be concerned.  You don't want to pay and receive notice that you went to the wrong place.  Contact the business that originally extended you credit.  They will be thrilled that you are willing to pay.  They will still have to pay the "collection" agent for their efforts, but your debt will be settled.  You didn't say if you are making a partial or full payment.  or are you trying to offer a settlement.   If a settlement or partial, get any verbal agreement in writing or email.

  4. Ahhh.....this one is always fun.

What has happened is the original creditor may have sent this same debt to different agencies, and they will be competing between themselves over who has the right to collect.

Or.....it was sold from one agency to another.  Either way, that puts you in the drivers seat.

Send both companies a certified letter demanding that they "validate" the debt.  Specifically, you want to see whatever paperwork they have to prove this debt was purchased or assigned to them.

Also you want to demand proof that whoever owns this has the legal right to collect it, and that they are licensed in your state to be collection agents.  Many states require that they be licensed.

For good measure, also demand signed contracts, bills, receipts, and whatever they have showing how the calculated exactly what they claim you owe.

The sit back and watch the fun!
