im currently in the 8th grade. my school's volleyball team is in division 6. the lowest division possible. im pretty good at volleyball though. im very good at digging and diving. for highschool i'd probably try out for libero or ds. but the thing is, my other qualities arent so good. my overhand isnt NEARly as good as it can be. and there are still a lot of things i can work on maybe outside hitting or setting. i have alll summer and now to play to be HOPEFULLY JV potential by freshman year in highschool. is it possible? im going up against CLUB players and i really have love for volleyball. so any tips, drills, exercises or ideas i could use to become a better volleyball player? THANKS!

  1. I used to Coach high school volleyball. My favorite all around drill that will help all your skills, speed and control is:

Find a basket ball court. From the free throw line, use the box above the hoop as a target. Serve the ball at the target. The objective is to use the backboard to return the ball. Bump and set to yourself, and try to hit it back at the target. Try to keep it going. Stay on your toes because if you miss you will have to move to get to the ball. Start out slow, don't hit it very hard. with the main focus on control, the rest will come with time. It is a difficult drill but it really pays off in the end and it is something you can do on your own.

  2. Do a lot of leg exercises, like jumping rope and wall sits. For libero, you should work on your passing and serves (since liberos are alowed to serve now *yay*).

  3. Practice!  Bump, Set, Spike!

Practice with a friend, talk to some players in the JV team, or even alumnis who played volleyball, etc.  Also, try to talk to the coach.  See what their insight is and what qualities they are looking for.

    Good luck!

  4. The biggest thing that helped me to get better in a short amount of time is agility and strength work. When your faster and stronger, you can do everything better. You hit better, you can move your feet underneath a hard driven ball (if DS is the way you want to go), and you can even learn faster because you will have the basics already in place, and you can focus on the skill instead of you athleticism.
