How can i break a both-feet driving habit?

i have my learners permit and i've been practicing in parking lots, and it seems like I can only drive with both feet.. one on the brake and one on the gas.

i know it's bad though and confusing with the brake lights on.

is it easier to not do this when you can go faster on a road i suppose? i just had to keep at 15 mph in the parking lot and so it was difficult.. my moms car has alot of power with the pedal though.

i haven't driven on an actual road yet.. i'm actually a little scared..

  1. You're driving an automatic? Why?

How could it be difficult if you dont have to control a clutch? It's just go forward, stop, reverse and turn! There is nothing to learn about it!

  2. When I first started learning I would do the exact same thing, and I thought I was hopeless. For practice I sat in the car while it was off and practiced switching ONLY my right foot between the gas and brake, and it became really comfortable. Keep your left foot away from the pedals so you're not even tempted. Also, go a bit slower than normal while you're still adjusting to driving with one foot and then when you start to get more confidence in it, build up your speed.

  3. Practice makes perfect.  Just be aware of it and spend a few hours practicing in a safe place and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

  4. Cut off your left foot or hire a little person to "pimp" slap you each time you use both feet.

  5. Don't start a bad habit

Right foot for gas and brake, left for the clutch (for manual trans)

  6. I am a driving instructor, tell Mom to only let you practice as long as your left foot is flat on the floor.  As soon as it hits the brake pedal, Mom ends the practice session.

I always start kids, with permits of course, on country roads or quiet suburban streets.  Parking lots are actually hard because of all the expensive cars, narrow lanes, people moving in and out, etc.

  7. Perhaps you could practice with a driving game on a computer or x-box...one that has the steering wheel and pedals, while you are at home.  If you don't have these, ask someone you know who may have one, to borrow it/them and/or go to their place to practice the proper method of using your feet for future driving.  Thanks for asking.
