How can i build my confidence wid horses?

Question

I have been horse riding for about 2 and 1/2 year. However i am not confident with horses and sometimes get nervous with them, I know horses can pick up on this 2. To try and build my confidence i have just got a horse on loan and because of my low confidence my family say i should give up with horses but i dnt wnt 2! lol How can i build up my confidence with horses? Any ideas?? Thank You!

Hmm I think you should have had more riding lessons before owning your own one...

However, older, quieter horses can be great confidence givers. I hope the pony you now own is one of those. Otherwise you will stay the same.

I also think you should read up on books on how horses think. It will be a great insight.

Meanwhile book some more lessons at your local barn and talk to the instructor and go from there. Good Luck.

I have worked with a few people who have had the same problem. And i have come to a solution that has worked with them. For the two women I worked with I taught them how to lounge  there horses. They say it helped because u had control of your horse in you hands from the ground. They got more comfortable around the horses and had full attention of the horses.

it depends on why ur not confident. Have you ever been thrown off a horse? My suggestion is to go to a riding school and have a couple of lesson on one of there horses, its in a controlled enviroment and they are pretty much bomb proof that way you can build that confidence up and transfer it into your own riding.

I understand where your coming from. i've been working with horses for over 9 years. i think the best way to get comfortable with a horse is my grooming it and just playing with it on cross ties or something of the sort. This makes the horse gain trust in you as you gain trust in it. Also when a horse knows, trusts, and loves you it will be more likely to try it's hardest to protect you. Also i would take lessons at a local farm. This will improve your riding and make you more confident on a horse in general. I always feel that horses enjoy someone who spends quality time with them on the ground over someone who gets on, gets off, and is done. Is it riding or handling you're not confident with?

Riding: push yourself to do one new thing that your instructor says you could do. it might be jumping on while the horse is trotting, jumping a small cross, learning to canter/ gallop, going on a short hack. As soon as you've learnt to do that one thing, then try another one.You will gain confidence as you learn you are more capable

Handling: take the horse for walks in hand, just for a bit of grazing or something. you could also try learning to do in hand showing. see if you can get your horse to follow you around while you're not holding the clip rope, and give him extra grooms.

dont give up, keep sticking at it
