  1. You can force the animal into a box or even a pillow case using something such as a broom to herd it into it.  You can then take it outside and release it.  However given that many wild animals (opossom in particular) are commonly carriers of the rabies virus, I would NOT attempt such a thing if possible to avoid doing so.  Contact your humane department or local health department to see if there is an animal/wildlife rescue program of some sort that will come out and capture the critter for you.  Rabies is no joke and again, possums and raccoons are VERY common carriers of this virus.  Please be careful.

Please vote for me if this helped.  I am trying to reach level 2. :)

Edit: in response to the poster who stated they are not aggressive - ANY animal can become aggressive if they are carrying rabies and the virus can overide the "playing possum" effect you're referring to.

  2. If you have to do it yourself try this one. This may sound mean but it will go into nervous shock if it's attacked it's a defense mechanism.Sometimes you have to rough them up pretty good but if you can confine it in the bathroom and make a lot of noise such as beating on pans or something else loud while holding it or gouging with a stick or broom it should sull up.The scoop it up in a box or something. They are not aggressive like raccoons.

  3. eww call the exterminator or pest control. i wouldnt do it myself, what if it has rabies or something and bites you?

  4. It's been two days, What's happened???

After writing this, I've been reconsidering allowing the  opossum to remain living in my yard.

Others have given good suggestions - calling authorities and being careful about rabies etc.

Can you keep the bathroom door closed until they come?

Opossums are nocturnal going to eat about 9-10 pm and returning at dawn.  As soon as it departs, you need to implement modifications to your home to prevent its re-entry. So, determine what you need to do during the day.

Opossums will take up residence in man-made living spaces to live near their food source. These locations are can be in the attic, walls, crawl space, under decks or porches and chimmies.

Opossums cause much damage. In homes, they are known to chew on wires, pipes and tearing insulation. They also leave fecal matter and urine. Plus, they carry insects and diseases.

To not attract opossums to your home, you should remove food sources. Opossums are omnivorous, eating both plants and animals. Popular opossum food sources are trash cans and pet-food containers. They will hunt down rats, squirrels, etc and then feed on the rodent’s existing food supply. Fruits, grains and insects are some popular opossum foods.

  5. Be careful.  They can be very mean when cornered.  They also bite.  Do you have animal control?  We don't in my small town...we have to call the police.  Our police have to take care of all of these kinds of problems, or perhaps they will tell you who to call.  We have a lot of "possums" here, and one was found to have rabies.  Keep the door closed and please go to the phone.
