Nope, you can't change official firmware (ofw) to customized firmware (cfw) w/o using pandora's battery.

There's some website explaining how to downgrade and upgrade your ofw to cfw step by step, and how to make your very own pandora's battery. Here are some that I used

they have a very nice explaination, by using cfw you can get a lot of fun things running in your psp, such as watching youtube, have an alarm clock, play emulators and so much more using homebrew.

And beside, by having pandora's battery you could easily back up your sony in case you ever bricked your psp, saves you a lot of trouble sending them to sony to be backed up :)
