  1. The exact process to do this will vary from state to state but in most states the process is similar and can be done without the help of an attorney.

Find the website for your counties court system.  Almost all counties now have legal forms on line that you can download.  The site will usually also tell you how much it is to file the paperwork with the court.  Complete the paperwork and file it with the court.  Some courts will require you to wait to go before a judge and others will let you go and notify you of the change by mail.  In Washington state the fee is $110.00.

  2. If you do it while getting married or divorced, then there is no extra cost. If not you have to pay court cost among other fees. Basically you have to find a lawyer to do it, then you have to take the legal document to the SS office and the DMV.

  3. usually an attorney can file the appropriate papers to do it, but it will cost you a ton of money to change your name.  Outside of the court costs to file the documents, you will need a new drivers license, social security card, car registration, insurance, etc. etc.  These places aren't going to give you new cards and ID for nothing!
