  1. You can certainly go the msconfig route, but a better choice, if possible, is to turn off startups in the applications that use them.  This removes them from the startup list altogether, as well as taking care of any other housekeeping necessary to not bring them up.

Messengers and media players are notorious for creating unnecessary startup tasks.

It's your call whether or not to turn off update schedulers.

If you do want to use msconfig, here's my set of instructions for using it:

    1. Click on the Start->Run menu item.

    2. In the Run text box, type in msconfig, then press Enter.

    3. In MsConfig, click the Startup tab.

    4. Clear the checkboxes next to the names of processes you don't want starting on boot.  Note:  These processes won't be removed from the list, they'll just remain deactivated, in case you have to reactivate them.  For some, you probably will.

    5. Click OK.

    6. Accept the reboot option.

Hopefully, the message won't come up on the next reboot.  You will, however, get a message about your configuration having changed.  In fact, if you just click OK, you'll get this message after every reboot, however, if you click the checkbox and click OK, the message won't come up again unless and until you make another msconfig change.

    Good luck.

  2. start>run>msconfig

In the startup tab you should see the processes that are initiated on startup. Uncheck all you dont need.
