Gandhi said to be the change you want to see. Beyound changing yourself, you can not only volunteer to help specific causes and situations,  but also volunteer for advocacy and education campaigns so that the changes go even wider.

If you are bothered by pollution and ecological degradation, then start recycling and reusing, no more plastic bags at the grocery, make a commitment to bike and walk and use mass transit instead of a car at least 50% of the time, etc. And volunteer for an organization focused on helping the environment.

If you are bothered by child abuse, then volunteer for groups like Parents Anonymous or for organizations that support youth in the foster care or judicial system.

You can volunteer for hospice organizations to help people who are dieing, and use the training you receive to help people in your family or friends who are facing crisis situations.

You can volunteer for education campaigns to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and to prevent discrimination against the people who have such.

You can raise money for organizations working to help people in the developing world -- for UNICEF, CARE International, MADRE, OxFam, and on and on.

You can do just about anything. One person CAN make a difference.

If you are in the USA, you can find volunteering opportunities for hundreds of organizations at VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com). There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

change the world? we need to SAVE the world..... you need to work on your own efforts.. eg: recycling, being vegetarian, and generally being aware of how your actions affect the planet....thats a good way to start..

You could start by campaigning to get rid of Bush and Cheyne - that's of course if you want to change it for the better.

find something you want done and find others who agree with you (particularly those already with some kind of power)

start small work your way up
