  1. The filter element in most over range exhaust hoods is removeable and washable.  They usually have a small ring near one side or the front, depending on how it was installed, that you can take hold of and move the element to one side or the other just a bit, and it should come down and out.

  2. It should pull free relatively easily with a provided tab or a little ab that slides over to allow it to fall. Once down, I have found that smearing wih a cream hand cleanser and allowing to sit about 30 minutes or an hour in a baggie will effectively and safely loosen the grease and dirt so it can be rinse in hot water. Bio-degradeable and easy on the hands. Spraying with a product such as SImple Green or even Castrol Purple degreaser will also do the trick if allowed to sit in a baggie or even a wal-mart sack closed up tightly for about 30 minutes then rinsed well. Repeat if necessary. Do this monthly and it shouldn't become a problem any more. If all else fails, you should be able to find a replacement for around $5 at your local home improvement store. All the listed products can be found in the automotive dept.

  3. I run mine through the dishwasher.=)

  4. Oven cleaner is brilliant for any surface that is not porous.

  5. If its replaceable- replace it.

If its washable- wash it in hot soapy water. You can also use a degreaser.

  6. What Corky said. When I cleaned for a living, during spring cleaning or cleaning for new residents I would take down the filter and let it soak in soapy water while I worked on the rest of the kitchen. Then I would scrub it, dry it, and put it back.
