i was able to do this before but i cannot figure out how to do it anymore. my laptop is directly connected to the internet through a modem. my friend set up a adhoc wireless connection. I was able to connect to the wireless network she has created and we were able to share internet connection as well as files. I had enabled the internet connection sharing properties in my dsl connection.

however, we have tried to do it again but we're not able to do same things again

  1. First off, Windows XP home belongs to the workgroup MSHOME, which you need to change to WORKGROUP.

Windows XP Pro is already a member of WORKGROUP.

Enable file sharing on each computer for your shared folder. You do not need to run wizard for this, choose " I know the risks, just enable sharing", if you don't want to allow files to be changed for that folder don't check "allow users to change my files" if you want to be able to delete, move, etc. CHECK THIS THEN.

Now that "each" computer is part of the same workgroup, which should be WORKGROUP. You can now access the shared folder between the two.

Use "My Network Places" to view all computers that are part of the same WORKGROUP.

Just enable "sharing" on any resource you want shared between the two. You will NOT be allowed access to system files in "sharing mode" between the computers.

You must have a Wireless router set up first and it is NOT necessary to have any of the computers "wired" to the router if both are already WiFi ready.

  2. Here is a great step by step for you...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

That is for XP   here is once for Vista

(it is easier than in XP!)

    Hope that helps.

  3. Set up the laptops in Ad-Hoc mode.  it's in the properties of the wireless connection.
