How can i connect a DVD recorder to my cable DVR so that i can record tv shows/movies?

the way i have it connected the on screen display comes up when i turn on the DVD recorder. When I click record I have a black screen and that's what's recorded. when the DVD recorder power is off I have my cable TV.

Well every recorder is different so check your manual if you still have it.  Connect your cable box to your DVR either throught in input/output conncectors or use A/V cables.  Once your cable box is connected to your DVR connect your DVR to your input/output connections on your TV.  I'm going by regular TV settings, I'm not sure about HD.  Let me know if this helps.
