I have a 9 month old JRT. When we go to my boy friends parents house he goes CRAZY. We recently moved out on our own and when we purchased the dog we lived there. So now when we go to his parents house to visit he goes NUTS. He bounces and runs from one couch to the other to a chair on to the coffee table and some times on the dinning room table. They have 4 dogs and they all start barking and its just crazy. He get SO happy when he goes over there and he gets to see his old dog friends. But they don't want to play with him cuz he is running all over the house.

I need to know how to control him. He does this only at there house. When i try to get him to discipline him he runs and thinks its a game. Its really embarrassing and it makes people not want him to come over. He is like my kid and i want to get this under control.

Any Suggestions.

Please don't tell me to not take him there. I need to fix the problem not avoid it.

  1. Not much you can do until they get used to each other. Also he's still a puppy. He will only calm down with age.

  2. I'd keep him leashed until he learns to be calm.  Freedom is a privilege. Alternatively you can remove him and put him in a different room when he starts going bonkers.

It would also help to get him super tired before you go over to the inlaws.. like TIRED.  Take him for an hour rollerblade/bikeride etc.  Or play fetch for an hour.

Can you chuck the dogs out in the yard and let them burn off their excitement that way?

We have friends who bring over a disruptive and uncontrolled dog.  My preference is to let them roughhouse outside, inside isn't wrestling time.  Or, keep him in a down stay most of the time he's at the house.

  3. How about keeping him on leash until he calms down. If he starts to calm you can slet the leash drop but leave it on ans it will be easier to catch and restrain him if he stars running crazy again. If your parents have a yard you could also let him greet his friends in the yard and run around for a while before he comes in the house. JRTs are extremely high energy and if this is the only situation he gets CRAZY in you are doing pretty well with the little guy.

  4. I have 3 dogs. I wouldn't think to take them to my in-laws house. That's not avoiding a problem; that's being respectful.
