Bought a hot tub that requires a 220 outlet, thought that was the outlet by the pool, but, I was wrong. Details on how to do this would be great..thanks!

  1. You'll have to run a separate 220 line with it's own GFI and breaker.

Spend the bucks and save a life , have a pro. do it.

  2. After you call an electrician to do this, because you want to insure your safety and that of others who may use the pool, he will bring the proper amperage and voltage to the circuit.  This requires a new circuit breaker, new wires, a receptacle, a box and a cover.  It does have to be a GFCI circuit.  You have 240 service in your house.

  3. The 220 outlet requires a heavier wire.....so maybe you could hook the heavy wire to the lighter one and pull the light wire back through from the breaker box. Then hook it up to a double pole breaker ( 40amp at least )....but with the way you asked your question it's obvious you know nothing about wiring...so call a pro to install it so you don't electrocute yourself in the hot tub.....as it requires a GFCI breaker and plug....and those are hard to hook up unless you know what you are doing.

  4. Some smaller tubs can be set up for 110v or 220. (Freeflow for example.) The difference is that the heating element will take 4 times as long to heat the tub.

Otherwise, you need a 240v run installed with a disconnect near the tub. That'd be where you call an electrician.

Also, some tubs need a special breaker setup. Some Caldera tubs for example have both a 240V and 110V breaker, so they provide you the box with the tub.

  5. Rewire unless you absolutely never want 110 off that line.  Under current code you need 4 wire to the outlet to do 220 with two hots, neutral, and safety ground.  If you rewire (new breaker) and use the white and black to carry 220, you must recolor the white to red at ends, make sure no 110 outlets are on the line.  I am not sure that is legal code these days although there are still 3 prong 220 volt plugs on the market like for heavy duty window air conditioners.
