  1. Hi Hannah,

Movie Maker can only handle AVI files, so you will need to convert the videos.

There is a free program called SUPER. The website is difficult to navigate, and the tiny download link is hard to find, but it is worth looking for.

Download and install it, and import your video[s]. Set the video out put to AVI at the top in the drop down box, and set the codec to MPEG4. Leave the audio at mp3. The bitrate will depend on the quality of the video. Something around 1000 should be fine.

Set the audio to 48k 2 channel, 128k, and choose encode button. A box will pop up asking what type of DivX you want to use. Select the very top one called 'DivX' and hit okay. It will encode your video.

If it doesn't work, then the bitrate you choose was either too high or too low for the video. Try chaning the bitrate to 2000 or 500 and see if it works. The bitrate determines the video quality.

    Good Luck

  2. Yes download SUPER

but don't use Divx unless you KNOW you have divx player and codecs installed on your PC.

Super can convert to MANY different formats, you want to convert to something you know your PC can work with.  WMV would be a good choice, or maybe Indeo.

You can see what codecs you have on your PC by clicking

Start / Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Hardware (tab at top of window)  then scroll down to the bottom and click on Video Codecs.  Finally click Properties tab, and you see the list of video codecs you have installed.  Convert to one of those.   Alternatively, if you don't have Divx, download and install it, it is a good one for high compression with a decent picture.
