  1. Just so you know, my 35 year old daughter just spent $800. bucks for one, to take to work so she has something to do on her lunch hour, now she has found out that an air card to run it away from home is $60.00 bucks a month, so, just be aware there is a lot more than just buying them as far as using them, maintenance etc., and if you do get one, pay the hundred bucks for a good heavy duty case, my nephew dropped his, and had it in a case, but not a heavy one, it is gone, also, you have to guard them with your life, people will doing just about anything if they think they can steal one. Are you really sure you want all that responsiblity to worry with?  Good luck.

  2. hi,

i'm 14 and bought my own laptop,

maby if you save up a bit and offer to pay for some of the computer.

  3. Most of your schoolwork probably won't need the use of a computer.  Many teachers still give assignments on paper, or assign questions out of the book.

Schools that get more funding (by the state government) spend more on technology... which means electronic assignments, e-mail correspondence with the teachers, online research, etc.

However, if this is the case, a desktop computer (tower) will likely best suit your needs.  Desktop systems are generally faster and have more storage capacity than laptops, at usually HALF the price.  You can get a good desktop for $300-$500, and a GREAT desktop for around $1000.  Comparatively, you can only get a low-end laptop for around $500, and a "good" system for $750-$1000.

Keep in mind that laptops are specifically designed for mobility - for people that travel pretty often (weekly or more).  Due to this mobility, laptops are much more prone to getting broken (dropped, banged around in a bag, food/drink spilled on) or stolen.  This happens often enough that people even sell "accident insurance", and LoJack systems to track a stolen laptop.  She is probably concerned about buying an expensive laptop, only to see it get damaged or stolen... which usually happens a month or two after the warranty expires.

I would start by speaking with your teachers, other students (sophomores), and their parents directly about the advantages (and dangers) of having a laptop as a high school student.  They may have very good reasons how it could help you as a student.  (NOT as a gamer... lol)

If your schoolwork requires it, and if you spend the entire weekend at dad's every other weekend, you may have a legitimate need for a laptop.

  4. You don't need one. I go to a Math Science and Technology school and I'm in the advanced classes(I was doing normal junior year subjects as a freshman) . I don't need one.

  5. time is tough now don't you see people all over the place loosing everything?you should be happy that you have  food ,clothes and shelter ...when she gets more money she might do it .can't you see she is not replacing her pc ? what does it means to you?

  6. She said No and that's what you're going to have to live with. If you really 'need' it you better start saving up so you can buy one yourself. Or at least offer to split the cost.

  7. Try talking to your mother about how the laptop will help.

If she says no save up some money for a laptop that you can buy by your self
