  1. O.k. mom listen up! It's obvious your daughter loves you very much and she wants you to stick around so she can seek your advice and count on your wisdom and also to give her a boot in the *** when she needs it. I have a wonderful and loving mom who had the surgery about 20 years ago after having a mini stroke. She is now 83 and still going strong.I have 3 sisters and we all love mom very much and are greatful to have her in our lives. We only have one mom. Please do it for your children so you can enjoy them and enjoy your life  as well! God Bless all of you.

  2. Tell your mom it is very important to take care of this because she could have a devastating stroke.  Depending on where the clogged particle breaks off and travels within the blood stream, she could have a heart attack or a brain attack (stroke-TIA).  My mom's carotid showed plaque.  She had a stroke twice.  Tell her it is not pretty.  My mom ended up aphasic with some memory problems.  She could not write or read well anymore either.  I hope it works out for you.

  3. Okay mom, now listen up. You want to be around to be with your grandkids now don't you. You have a lot to live for, if just for the children. They are the greatest gift that we can recieve and it would be a shame to have to leave them so soon. Besides your sweet daughter needs you and I do know she's a sweety. Don't forego the surgery if it can help make you be there longer for yourself and them. ♥♥♥

  4. hip lady's mom:

You have what is known as Carotid Artery Disease, which often occurs from atherosclerotic obstruction of the arteries.  The carotid artery is the main artery supplying blood to the brain.

If you have a blockage of more than 70%, surgery is usually recommended.

This surgery is called carotid endarectomy. It is a risky procedure but must be done in one way or another in most patients to allow their survival.  Complications of not having the surgery would include TIA's (mini-strokes), an actual stroke and other brain events, heart attack, eventually leading to death.

Seeing how the surgery was done before on the other side of your neck and it is being done on the opposite side this time, you don't have to worry about the complications of the recurrent procedure in the same location.

Even after surgery is completed, you can STILL get re-current carotid artery blockage, which can only be stopped by reducing your risk factors.

Only 3% of people will experience problems after this surgery.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that if you have high blood pressure that it is managed medically, stop smoking if you are currently, manage your diabetes well if you have diabetes, and manage your cholesterol levels.

Unless the surgeon or anesthesiologist thinks you can not have the surgery or thinks you can wait longer, then it is most likely in your best interest to have this surgery as the narrowing will eventually get so bad that you will die.

Please, for you and your daughter's sake, have the surgery!

BUT- I strongly say that you need to find out what the surgeon's opinion is on if you should have surgery or not.

Best of luck to both of you!

  5. This surgery, carotid endarterectomy, will probably prevent a massive stroke and possibly save her life. Even if she had it done before, arteries can clog up again; when they do, they need to be cleared to prevent stroke.  The alternative is to wait until blood flow can no longer get to the head which will cause portions of the brain to die (which in turn causes brain damage, blindness, inability to speak, paralysis, and loss of independence).

You love your mom and want what's best for her.  She can show how much she loves you by taking care of herself so you won't have to do it for her when she's incapacitated.

  6. Look mom.. gee whiz i wish i had a mom now to talk to. Dang Hip Lady is so lucky as old as she  still has a mom. My momma died way back in '93 . Wish i still had her now. Cause momma and daddy are both gone. Look momma you can have this surgery and stay around for Hip Lady to have you. Nothing could be done with my momma but you momma have a chance for a few more years for Hip and the great grands to know and love. Do it for them cause i wish my momma was still here and I still cry after all these years since her passing. I miss her so much. Please if you dont do it for yourself do it for your daughter cause i dont want to lose you like i did mine. Really mom I aint got nobody cept my sons, their kids and hubby now. I just would like you to stick around for your daughter and me. PLEASE.

  7. Most moms don't listen to medical advice from their children, but maybe she will listen to medical advice from a doctor.  Ask your mom to compromise - have her make an appointment with a cardiologist to evaluate her condition and recommend whatever treatment is needed.  If she is still reluctant, she can get a second opinion.  If 2 cardiologists recommend surgery, its a safe bet that its needed.
