How can i convince my mom to let me get a laptop?

Question

my stepdad agrees i will need one for school (im a freshman)

the family computer does not have word, excel, or anything like that on it because it was ALL deleted a few months ago, so in reality i do NEED one. although their computer has it.

she thinks i will be on it 24/7 and on myspace and says i need a cell phone more (i lost mine a few months ago) cause i will be walking home from school and babysitting my brother.

my grandma gave me her old cell phone it just needs a SIM card or something.

i REALLLLLLY want the laptop though, I WILL be paying for it. NOT them. how can i convince her? i dont even go on myspace that much i talk to my friends on Instant Messanger since we're all going to different schools =[

What's it matter if you use your own money?

Personally tho, their computer is just fine if it has the programs you need.  Even the family computer can have those programs loaded back onto it.. as most of those come with the windows program, which you should have the discs for.

Your mom is right that you need the cell phone more for your safety.

If your friends reject you because you have "no computer freedom" then they were not very good friends anyways.  When I was in school I was only allowed on the computer about 2 hours each nite, unless it was for a school assignment.

You would be better off to save your money, and buy a laptop when you go to college.. you really WILL need one then.  The laptop you buy now will be obsolete and useless by the time you go to college.

Be mature when asking her and dont whine. Just explain to her that you need it for school. don't say anything about not going on myspace unless she brings it up. ask her when shes calm and not mad or anything. also explain to her that you are going to pay for it. since you are paying for it i dont see why you even need your moms permission.

Just use Open Office.  Works just the same as word/excel/etc but it's completely free.  Download it at OpenOffice.org.  And no, I don't work for them.  I just support projects I like, and I like this one.
