  1. My parents weren't sure I was mature enough and responsible enough to have contacts. I saved up 1/2 the cost of the doctor's fee and the lenses on my own and asked again.

When my folks realized I was completely serious, not whining, and had planned ahead to help pay for them, they agreed to let my ophthalmologist make the final decision. He felt they'd really be good for me, so I got them.

After that, the optical cost of exams, etc., didn't exceed the previous costs, so my folks were happy. Today, with Costco and on-line sources it's really even cheaper.

    Bottom line:

don't whine; it's an immediate turn-off to parents 'cuz you sound like a kid having a tantrum at the grocery store. Show your parents how mature you are, research costs and availability, and your folks will probably agree to getting the contacts.

  2. Tell her that contacts aren't that expensive. You don't have to get new ones every three months, just buy a year supply or get the ones that don't have to be changed. Glasses also render peripheral vision and distort your sideline vision. Maybe you should research cheap contacts online, I've seen a couple commercials for inexpensive ones on TV that you could get.

  3. take your prescription to cosco. contacts r cheap there. they also dont need to be replaced every 3 months.

  4. You could try rationalizing the necessity for contacts.

Try telling your mother something like: "I look like such a total geek with thick, dorky-looking glasses, none of the boys will date me ! I'll never get married, I'll wind up being an old maid ! You will never get any grandchildren, you will spend your declining years alone and unloved and it will all be your fault, for not buying me contacts!"

Note: memorize and practice it a few time first so it doesn't sound like you're reading it off a card.
