I do good at school. I'm pretty well-behaved and i do everything my mom and dad say (lol it sounds g*y i know), and i asked my dad the other day for a car and he said its not safe for me to drive and that its too expensive. Eventhough i'm pretty wealthy AND a good driver, he just doesn't want to get me a car. Any suggestions? I have my license btw.

  1. Well, you haven't convinced me you deserve a car.

Why should you get a car just becuase your good at school? I take your parents side on this one, especially the new car part.

Instead about whining how your responsible and such, show them. Take your time and get a part time job babysitting, or at the grocery store just to show them that you need a car.

Improve your grades, and manage your time more.

Sitting on the computer and asking for excuses to blow a huge amount of money on a car you don't need isn't going to impress them any more than your impressing us.

  2. You would need to define "pretty wealthy".  Besides the cost of the car, there is the cost of gas and the cost of insurance.  Insurance for a teen driver would be on the order of $4000 - $6000 per year, depending on where you live.  Gas for a typical teen driving pattern (100 miles / week) will run about another $1000 - $1500 with the cost of gas these days.  (These are all US figures -- gas costs will be higher elsewhere, but I can't even guess international insurance rates).

There's also the consideration that teens are 10 to 20 times more likely to get in an accident, and the number goes even higher if they are driving with other teens in the car.  So your dad's fears for your safety are quite well-founded.

Be patient, borrow dad's car on the occasions that he lets you, and enjoy your youth.  You'll have plenty of time to worry about car payments and gas costs when you're an adult!

  3. Get a job and buy it your self. You will value it more. It may not sound fair, but life is not fair fare is what you use to ride the bus.

  4. Do you brand NEW or a car that is NEW to you (but used or almost new)?

Don't get offended but I agree with your parents.  Forget the money.  But you should practice driving with your parents to get better.

Consider that about 25% of new teen drivers get into an accident the first yeat. Those are just the REPORTED accidents.

    Good Luck...

  5. I don't understand.  If you're wealthy, then why do you need your parents to buy a car for you?  What I'm guessing you really mean is that your PARENTS are wealthy.  But that doesn't mean YOU are...keep in mind that just because they can probably afford it, that doesn't make you entitled to it.

However, I would do your research and pick out a car that you like, and gets great crash-test ratings.  Go to them armed with all the facts and figures that you can find.  Then, get a job to show you can handle responsibility.  Once you've done that, don't ask them to buy it FOR you, but rather loan you the money for it.  You can pay them back at a reasonable interest rate, like 5% APR for 5 years.  This is a better rate of return than they'll get with an ordinary bank account.

Show them the numbers and sell them on the idea.  Just saying that "I deserve it" and "you can afford it" just simply isn't good enough.  Make a case that makes sense for everybody.

  6. get a job and start saving toward your own car. When your parents see that you are taking responsibility, they might be more likely to help you.

  7. It's not you, your parents are scared.  In NY, every month there is a kid in high school killed in a car wreck, sometimes more, it's so frequent it's scary, i see it all the time in the paper.  So, they are trying to delay the inevitable of you driving.  Is that good or bad?  I don't know.  I got a car at 16, i dont' know if i could have waited, nor do i know what I'll do when my daughter enters driving age.  It's a tough thing.  Best bet is to save up for your own, then they really can't stop you.

Don't blame your parents though, they are just looking out for your safety.
