How can i cover a firmica back splash in kitchen?

Tclic517 if you cannot remove it, You can use coarse 60 grit sand paper to get surface rough,  then cover with ceramic tile.  I would buy your thin set premixed.  Or you can go over it with 120 grit sand paper, put on coat of primer, I would use Zinsser, put on coat of paint.
