How can i covert AVI to DVD.?

I have a series of shows i want to burn on to my DVD-r cds. I want something that converts them to the cds and i want the same quality on the cds no audio mess up or out of sync. And i was wondering if i can convert them in to divx then will it be able to play on my panasonic dvd palyer it is a sa-ht740 i relly need help.
