I'm part of an Environmental club in my school and we want to hold a car wash as a fund raiser, however we are fully aware that doing this can cause harms to the Earth....

SO, how can we have an Eco-Friendly Car-Wash?

  1. Hold it at a car wash facility.

The biggest problem with car washing is that the dust on cars tends to be toxic.  They pick it up on the roads - from tire dust, exhaust soot and brake pads.   So the water that runs off from car washing is toxic, especially when you do a lot of it at once.

The sewage treatment system isn't really set up to deal with it.  However in a lot of cities, car washes have special catch basins to filter and separate the toxins before letting the water into the sewer system.  Check with your city if that's so.  If not it doesn't matter where you do it.

In areas with water shortages, that's the other problem with car washes.  Make sure all your hoses have nozzles on them so you can turn off the water when you don't really need it.

  2. in order to have an ecofriendly car wash:

    * Use 1-2 bucketful of water to wash a car instead of washing it using a hose pipe.

    * You can reuse the soap solution made in the bucket

    * Apply the soap solution using a sponge

    * Dont throw the waste water in the bucket down the drain. Use it to water the plants.

You can also follow the following steps :

If you must wash your car at home, choose a biodegradable soap specifically formulated for automotive parts, such as Simple Green’s Car Wash or Gliptone’s Wash ‘n Glow. Or you can make your own biodegradable car wash by mixing one cup of liquid dishwashing detergent and 3/4 cup of powdered laundry detergent (each should be chlorine- and phosphate-free and non-petroleum-based) with three gallons of water. This concentrate can then be used sparingly with water over exterior car surfaces.

Even when using green-friendly cleaners, it is better to avoid the driveway and instead wash your car on your lawn or over dirt so that the toxic waste water can be absorbed and neutralized in soil instead of flowing directly into storm drains or open water bodies. Also, try to sop up or disperse those sudsy puddles that remain after you’re done. They contain toxic residues and can tempt thirsty animals.

  3. Paint everyone green and put green food coloring in the cleaning solution! Go wild and even buy green brushes!!

    The sky's the limit!!
