add contacts. they could be from something other than yahoo. if they are online, a smiley face will come by their name and u can chat withthem

Am not sure if i understadn your question. But if you mean that can you chat with friends using other messengers then yes, Yahoo! messenger lets you chat with Windows Live Messenger friends ( those who are using msn chat)

If you want a Messenger service that lets you chat with friends on almost all messenger clients try adium.. its a wonderful one

you have to join a chat room or start a chat room for chatting.

unless you just IM someone on you buddy list, whether family or friend who is online. if they aren't online you won't be able to IM them.
