How can i edit the name of a video file without.....?

Question

Each time i try to edit the name of a video/music file, my computer changes it to this weird icon. My computer can still play the file, but certain things will not be able to recognize this file.

Ahhh. mine does that too. I think it is because you are leaving off the extension when you rename it. Some operating systems require you to put it. For example it is a video file named "Video" and the icon for it is a Windows media player icon, since that's what would play it. Then you rename it to "New name" and the icon becomes a white file or some other thing.

If this is the problem, what you have to do is find out the regular extension. If it is an .avi file then save it as "new name.avi" or if it is a .mp3 file, then save it as "new name.mp3".

I think Enmity is right, the only thing I would add is that Microsoft's default is to hide that dot three extension.  I always go in and turn it back on.  In XP you go into Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab, then remove the check from hide extensions for known file types.

This way when you rename your file you will see the extension.
