When popping up i sometimes will get up to one knee only instead of getting up completely. Is it because i'm rushing or could it be some other reason?

  1. Yeah, when I first got my 6'4 Fish I caught myself on my knees sometimes.  But now I mostly got it.

What I would do is take off your fins so you can practice at home or dig a hole out for your fins in the sand at the beach.

Then get on your board and practice your pop-ups exactly how you would in the water.  It's a little tricky with boards that your feet hang off the back.  So when you practice on solid ground, make sure your feet are not pushing off the ground (because you can't do that in water!).  This will get you used to the scenario during waves.

Since you can't brace your feet on the back of a shortboard, use your knees as a brace (not to be mistaken with using them to stand).  Then once your back is arched so you don't nose-dive, hop up to your feet in one smooth motion.  You want it to be quick as possible so there are no balance inequalities on the board.

IF your using a long board, then you'll be able to make smooth pop-ups much easier since your feet aren't hanging off the back. Basically your just jumping up to standing since you're using your feet as a brace to pop-up.

That's my way, so keep trying 'till you get comfortable (practice 'lots), but DON'T ever get in the habit of popping up to your knees, then feet.  I won't work.  Just keep surfing, and one day you'll realize that your doing it no prob!

    practice. practice. practice...

  2. u cant always ensure a clean popup,

but listen to Colton A about the twist thing

i'd get kneeling with your front foot on the board, and the knee of your other foot on the board with the top of that foot on the traction pad

heres a retarded picture of it i found on google: http://www.getfitwithkris.com/images/onl...

    then twist up

  3. Just practice on your carpet.

  4. all you need to do is just practice, practice, practice. but sence you said that you get on your knee sometimes. you could put your foot on the traction pad and twist your way up. (its really  hard o explain in words)

  5. mhmm probably just keep practicing on the ground till you do it really good and fast

make sure I know its hard but when ur paddling for a wave make sure ur balanced on the center of ur board

bc if ur not centered it'll be very rocky and inbalanced when you pop up

    also

be sure when you pop it needs to be one fluid solid motion

if ur getting up on ur knee it might be harder because ur already hard to get off of ur knee

soo next time just try to do it all in one motion

    you'll get it!

    ur close I can tell

    good luck!

keeep practicinggg, in a matter of time you'll be showing up ppl

  6. practice...practice...practice....practi... get it.

this might be what theyre saying about twisting up

    good luck

  8. No matter how much you practice on solid ground (like some people are saying), it's not going to help you out in the water man. You have to practice in the water, you'll eventually fail enough times that you'll actually start succeeding and get smooth clean pop ups. Just chill bro, relax, don't rush. You need a clear mind when surfing, don't think about what your going to do next, don't think about making a clean pop up, just do what you do and keep doing it, you'll get better in time.

  9. Practice is the only answer. I have been surfing since 1966, and the same thing happens to me every now and then. Practice, even on your living room floor; work out doing squat thrusts and keep on surfing.

By the way, I was surfing some GREAT waves this weekend, and I saw the same thing happen to great surfers. The human body and our reflexes are not infallible. No go surfing, and have fun!
