  1. Fill out the application.

  2. First, don't do poetry.com. It's a scam. You will win, and then they will ask you to purchase a copy of the publication in which you appear. You should NEVER pay to be published, and you should always be paid when you are published, even if it is just one contributor copy. If you are not even getting that, then something is sketchy.

Before you enter a poetry competition, be very sure you have a strong, tight poem because the competition is stiff.

There are many legitimate poetry contests. If you join this group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CRWROPPS-B... you will be emailed all the legit contests.

There are also two types of poetry competitions: individual poems and book-length collections.

Both contests are to help the journal or publisher raise money. For the book-collection contests, man, you better have a really strong manuscript. Each publisher receives about 500 to 1000 manuscripts. I know this because I've been a reader for many publishers. Book contests will generally cost you $15 to $30 to enter. If you win, you usually get anywhere between $250 to $1000 and sometimes $2000 and rarely $10,000. And you get about 25 to 100 author copies. Here's a good list of legit book contests: http://redactions.com/book_contests.asp

For the individual poems, these are done by journals. Again, the competition is steep. It generally costs $5 to $15 enter. Usually you win around $100 and some contributor copies of the journal in which your poem appears.

But why enter a contest. Why not just submit the poems to the journals for free, or almost free there's postage to send and for the SASE. That's the best route to go.

Send to many journals and send a lot and often.

To find journals, get The Poet's Market or go to www.duotrope.com. Follow each journals submission guidelines.

  3. poetry.com has contests monthly, and yearly...you enter your poem and see if you make it to the semi finalist adn from there you can see if your poem will become published!
