I fell of my horse a couple of weeks ago and hurt my arm. I dident brake it but i had to see the doctor and he said i had just badly sprained it. I fell of my 14.3 horse luke. He has a lovely temperment but he can be a horrible thing in the manarge! It hurt terribly and now im scared of going into the managre and hurting my arm again. ( or braking it). I was jumping at the time and cantering around. Luke is a thourbred cross, and can be very annoying and fast. Outside the managre like on a hack along the fields and briddleways he is fantastick in a canter or trot. And he will quite happily jump over a log and sutch. But when in the mangre he isint very good atall. He throughs his head down and tries to get you off. Should i sell him even though he will be a devil to sell. Or can you help me?

  2. You can start with little steps in getting closer to the horse.

But I think you can use self-hypnosis to get your mind and body back in synchronization so that you will relax and not just feel safe, but be safe.  Whatever spooked your horse sounds like it spooked you too.

I've answered several questions on how to get into deep meditation.  Here is a copy of the last:

This is where deep meditation will help and where you can self-hypnotize yourself to be free of your fear.

You start by laying down in your bed. You relax your muscles starting at your toes and work your way up your body. I also am working on drifting. If you concentrate on being relaxed and floating, soon you will find that you are so relaxed and deep enough in meditation that your mind can travel many places.

So, I know you can bring your mind to a very peaceful place where you are able to relax and stop thinking -- it takes practice. While you are practicing, every time a thought comes to you, push it away with deeper concentration on floating.

Best of luck -- don't let this take you away from something you love so much!  Get well, then get back on the horse.

  3. Its really important that horse and rider match each other.  Kinda got two choices here - either sell him and buy another whose temperment may be more suited to you.  Or get some help.  I've been through a similar situation some years ago.  Bought a youngster and over 12 months she basically got in charge of me and took the mick out of me which it sounds like your horse is doing to you.  I got some help with a very experienced rider/trainer not so much about riding but behaviour - both mine and the horses - so that I was in charge and not my mare.  This worked for me and she is the best horse I have ever had.  But I have to keep on top of her mentally and ensure she always knows I am in charge.  Your horse will know you are a bit scared and take advantage of that.  If you really don't want to sell, try and get some help to work with him.  If this doesn't work, then get another horse that is more suited to you.  Your safety and enjoyment has to be the most important thing.  Best advice is really to get some good advice and help from an experienced and respected trainer/teacher.  Good luck.

  4. Don't take him in the mangre. Need a new horse that's capable of going where you want them to without hurting you. Could be a broken back next time and we don't want that.

  5. I had a similar incedent were i had to throw my self of my 14.2 horse as i went out on a hack on my own and he bomed it of on me and wouldnt stop so i had to throw my self off, i havent been out on a hack alone since, but i might try it next week when i am off school.

YOu should go into the menarge for about half an hour and jus walk around, both sides and through the middle etc.. then next time you ride do the same, when YOU feel ready, have 20 mins of walking and 5/10 mins of trotting and gradually build it up in the menarge and show him whos boss. I hope this helps you, reply back, if you need help with anything else, let me know. :)
