How can i find a WW2 veteran from Iowa who served in the Marines and fought on Iwo Jima?

this is for my wifes grandma who knew him before he left to war and wrote afterward but she lost contact with him. his name is Joseph Wolford. we dont know if he is still alive or not. also i have tried nataluis , yahoo, and a bunch of other people search sites and have not found much.

There is something called the National Archives. If you go to the link you can download the forms you need to ask about military records, but you may need a signature from the next of kin to access these papers. I'm not sure as I have never used the resource. Good luck to you!
