  1. In Melb, I think your best bet is to check out your nearest TAFE...where they offer courses for people interested in that field; a chat with one of the teachers may give you pointers to local businesses who may (or may not) give you a job.  TAFE also runs pre-apprentice courses as well as the actual apprentices.  Check the phone book for their phone number and give them a ring.

Also some of the courses are linked to the Uni degree.

Other places would be to apply at engineering workshops; expect some refusals but if you make a good impression and once your face becomes known some one, or his mate in the workshop down the road, will give you a go.

Dunno if this helps, but good luck :)

  2. If you're in Melbourne, Australia I don't know what I can do to help you. If you're somewhere in the USA, then I know of a great local company that hires Mechanical Engineers. American Power Conversion (www.apc.com), based in Rhode Island with offices around the world, mostly makes backup power supplies for computers. If you're a recent graduate or soon to graduate, these guys hire a lot of recent graduates.

Give them a shot, they're the #1 company in a huge growth industry and they treat their employees great. Don't worry too much if you're in Florida or something, they'll fly you up to RI and put you in a nice hotel on the water in Newport.
