  1. Use a map that has longitude and latitude

  2. Latitude & longitude is an angular distance measured in degrees, minutes & seconds.

Lines of longitude go north/south from 0° to 180°, meet at the poles and measure distance east/west from the Prime Meridian (Greenwich, England).

Lines of latitude go east/west from 0° to 90°, are parallel to each other and measure distance north/south from the Equator.

Example: my boat is located in South Beach Harbor, San Francisco, California at

    37° 46' 47.5” N

    122° 23' 16.2 ” W

Which means it's about 38° north of the equator and 122° west of the Prime Meridian.

    Sydney, Austrailia is 33° 52' S and 151° 13' E.

  3. Firstly you will need a map or chart of the region that shows Latitude and Longitude at the side and top of the map.

Your location must read Lat either North or South (of the Equator) and Long either East or West (of Greenwich).

For general locations similar to those asked for on this site it is just a matter of looking at the numbers at the side and top of an atlas and you can find the location.

If you use Google Earth then the pointer indicates the Latitude and Longitude that you are pointing at.
