I've just bought an imac g3. upon hooking it up to an ethernet cable, which is connected to a router, ive found that i need my ip adress and subnet mask to continue. It does not tell me when i go into system preferences, under network, and click on built in ethernet, and click on TCP/IP, and it doesnt work if i go to terminal and type ifconfig, so, is there anything else i can do?

  1. To to a console and type ifconfig

Okay, I didnt completely read your question, try this, go to /etc/networking

    type pico interface

This will bring up your network cards, look and see if there is any eth0 configed there.
