  1. You can look at your plat of survey and it may have the sewer lines on the plat.  I have a septic system and we found the tank with a metal detector.  If you  have actual sewer lines, the village or town or water department should be able to tell you where they are.

  2. I feel sure that you might find someone locally who will try to 'sell you' on his or her 'diving rod' prowess to find your clean-out connection to your sewer line.  Seriously 'though:

Do you know who the builder of your home was (hopefully *still is alive*)? If so, you should try to contact the builder and ask (him) about any drawings (he) might still have regarding the plumbing layout for your home.  I've always been of the impression that since WW-II, at least, all newly-built homes in this country had to have detailed drawings of their basic requirements -- to include *especially* the plumbing therefor. I also was of the firm understanding that the clean-out connection in the sewer lines from *every individual* residence must be in a "conspicuous", above-ground location!

  3. if you have a raised foundation where you can crawl under the house, you can find it and transpose your measurement to the outside and dig it up.

otherwise there are "Pipe Location" companies which will send a device down the main drain via your toilet and locate your pipes much like a treasure hunter with a sensing device.

  4. There are several ways.

Check with your local agency, IE village, city town, county.  They usually take the shortest route from your home to the street.

A good plumber can tell you by looking at it and an even better one can put a snake down with a sensing device attached to locate which direction and how deep...

If the home is not too old, it should also be in your Real Estate documents incorporated in the zoning with the lot info. Look for a PLATT MAP. IF it is not here, check with aforementioned local agencies.

  5. Regardless of where you live, city or country, if you're on a city sewer line or have a septic tank, there should be a cleanout opening on the main drain line, (probably about a 4" dia. pipe),  located in the basement.  The only time you should have to dig up the septic, is to find the lid so it can be pumped out and the guys that do that stuff are really good at locating the tanks.

  6. if you are wanting to have it cleaned, the plumber can go through the vent stack on your roof,if you house is on a foundation you can go through the main drain ,even if you have to brak the main and put a Y boot in the main, but if you just want to find your sewer line ,you can have a plumber come out and do a leak detection on it,it will p/u any signs of running water, and depending on  the signal, will determine if its a sewer or water main, better have a fat wallet.
