  1. The Belarc Advisor ( a  free program ) will give you that info and much more -

The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

    Download it from

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

  2. To be very sure, you just dissemble your machine. Remove the cover of your system unit and find the RAM and video card. You should see the labels and brand of those hardware.

  3. Open up your computer - Your RAM type and speed will be listed on the chip itself.  (i.e. DDR3 / 1200mhz).  If you want to make sure that you are buying compatible Ram, take one of the chips up to the computer store with you.  Another quick/easy way to check for compatibility is to go to http://www.crucial.com/.

  4. Your friend is full of c**p.   Ram can be generic so long as its compatible with your motherboard

Same applies with a video card,  however upgrading video cards can be a bit more tempestuous than ram because theres so many driver problems when you drop a newer card onto an older board.
