I am looking to get a MA in Counseling Psychology and I am looking at colleges/universities that will improve my odds of getting hired. I have seen Argosy University and I am wondering if it is like another Phoenix University or if it is actually a decent college. I am looking for colleges/universities on the East Coast. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

  1. Argosy has a horrible reputation as a "diploma mill".  Colleges which are widely known as online colleges often have this reputation, and Argosy is in that category.  You can read more opinions about this at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthre... .

Anyway, I went ahead and did a MA in Counseling Psychology search for you, selecting only East-Coast schools to determine what's out there for you.  I ended up with 170 schools.  Rather than posting them all, I'll tell you what I did:  I went to http://www.petersons.com/GradChannel/cod... , plugged in your degree level, major, and all the East Coast states.

Another resource would be to check out US News and World Reports' rankings for top grad colleges in Psychology.   I found the list for 2005 at http://consusrankings.com/2008/05/02/us-... .

  2. For counseling your degree is useless unless you can get licensed. Look at the licensing board in the area you'd like to work. If the degree doesn't lead to a license, don't do it.

Argosy is not a diploma mill. (Diploma mill meanse you pay, do little to no work, and get a worthless degree). On the other hand, if there's no internship component that should be a flag. You can't work as a counselor without that and you certainly can't get any certifications or licenses. Accreditations to look for: Middle States, CACREP (although some schools w/o CACREP are still good). The school should indicate that the program prepares you for a license in some way. Try the Peterson's Guide, then start making calls. Cross check with the local board.

  3. I sure hope you don't mean University of Phoenix. then it's a waste.

  4. You can use edsoup.Just sign up. Let them find you. It's easy and free.

  5. You are looking for the school in East Coast!! That's awesome!  Well, You should check out Boston College, Boston University, Northeaster, Clark, Harvard, New York University, Johns Hopkins, American University, Georgetown, George Washington University... you should check out Princeton Review's 365 great college books and check it out.  Or go to collegeboard.com  and surf around the site.  If not, then go to barnes and nobles and look at their college books. Just read them there so you don't have to buy them.  You local library might even have books with ur major and schools that have that major.  Good luck!
