  1. Actually you can ask your realtor - they are required to divulge that information IF the buyer asks.

It may also be in your paperwork on the house - there is something called an abstract that shows all the past owners- when they bought it, when they sold it, and often contains family histories and other facts about the property.

  2. Ask the neighbours or local shopkeepers who've been there for years.  They should know if anything has happened.

  3. If some one died there with in the last 3 years they have to state that by law when you buy the house. I would do a search at the police station with that address and see what comes up.

  4. Go to the library and search through newspaper archives.

  5. It is a disclosure issue and would have been on the papers you signed when you purchased the home.  That being said, if someone died in the home of natural causes years ago, that may not be disclosed depending on the laws of your state (some limit the number of years for disclosure).  If you suspect there was a crime committed, you can access police blotter archives at the library searching under your address.  In my case, I found the historical society in my community had information about a 1919 cape cod home I'd purchased and events involving my property prior to the disclosure laws in that state.  If you are talking about bad things, like a flood, electrical fire, or other issue, ask your insurance agent as they can run a history of claims.
