Question Details: I'm trying to connect my xbox to xbox live via xbox 360 wireless adapter. it says that i am connected to my wireless network but it cannot obtain an IP address. It might be because my router is not DHCP enabled.

What does this mean and how do i find out if my router is DHCP enabled?

Thanks

  1. Two ways of doing it, the sure fire way is:

On your computer go to start->run and type "cmd" click ok. In the window type "ipconfig" and write down your IP Adress (this is your local IP address)

Next open a new internet browser and in the address type your ip address except after on the 4th set of numbers put a 0

ex: 192.168.100.101 means you type in 192.168.100.0

It should bring up a router management box and most likely ask you to login. Try the account admin with the password admin, if that does not work (or it comes back page not found) find your router's manual or talk to whoever set up your router to find out the account name and password and the router's default IP address.

After that you should be able to surf around in there a bit and find the dhcp option to see if it is enabled.

    The best guess way is:

Go into your computer's control panel and find the network connections icon. Go to your Local Area Connection icon -> properties -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties. In the new window that pops up under the General tab see if your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP is most likely enabled) or if it is set to "Use the following IP address" (DHCP is most likely not enabled). If you have to change that option (on the router, do not change it on your computer until the router itself is changed) you can most likely use the steps outlined in #1 to get into the router's option menu or consult the router's manual.

For your own information, DHCP tells the router to automatically manage each device on the networks IP address for them instead of what is known as a static address where each network device is told to keep the same address consistently.

  2. call ur broad band service they will help u out

  3. Basicaly, it's requesting it's own unique IP. DHCP will do this auto-magically. Without DHCP you will have to manually set up an IP for each computer/XBOX.

I would google search your router, name and model, and see what it says about how to get into the admin section. There should be a setting in there (assuming this isn't an antique router) about enabling DHCP.

  4. check your routers setup page, usually you would have to conect the router to your laptop or pc through its lan cable and type in the routers default ip and the get to the setup page when you can find all the info u need

  5. Get to your router's setup page and login.  Search for the box that says "Local DHCP Server" or something similar.  Make sure DHCP is enabled.

  6. well check it out by goin into command line  n type

    ipconfig /all
