  1. Ask to see it...if anyone received a medal, especially a purple heart, they should be proud to show it.  Even more so if they are bragging on it!  And don't let them give you the old "I lost it" line.  It will be documented and they can show you prove of it being awarded.

  2. if they were in the army and were wounded they do receive a purple heart. ask to see it, and if they don't so it to you ask to see their wound and if they don't so it to you, you can presume they are lying...

  3. weldon very good question

just ask directely with jumping at the same place

  4. DON'T ask to SEE the medal.. believe it or not, actual, authentic medals can be purchased on line... so technically, ANYONE can actually POSSESS one!!! That's no proof that the person was actually awarded it.  Not all the recipients would be "proud" of it, either... take for example, Sen John Kerry who THREW his medals at the Capitol building in protest of the war.  HE wasn't PROUD of them!

Technically, the US Gov't is the only place to get "valid" information, and as such, needs to be submitted in writing, and there is a small fee.  (see 2nd link below)

There are two "commercial" sites that allow a search, but these are commercial sites, and charge you a membership fee.

There are other sites that list recipients, but these are generally "private" sites, where people can register their own medals or those of those they know of.  Their reliability is "iffy" at best.

I do not know if the OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT site will give you any medals awarded, you have to request the record to find that out.

There you have it.  GOOD LUCK in your search.

    Have a polite day.

  5. Ask to see copies of their DD-214's.  It is a summary of military service.  It also lists all medals, honors and everything about their military service.  That's about the only real way I can know for sure.  It will also be the way that you can tell a hero from a wanna-be.

  6. If you think they're lying about something like that, that says enough about the person. Ask to see it, for one, and if they can't produce one, just assume they never received one.

  7. Go with your gut

  8. It's possible that there is a mikitary database somewhere that you could search, but know this: in any military conflict, people get hurt one way or another, and almost all of them get purple hearts.  In Viet Nam, people were getting them for getting their fingers stuck in a typewriter!  Belive me, it's no big deal.

  9. I believe there may be some kind of registry where you can have it checked out. Future employers do the same thing.
