  1. There is not a public schedule for when freight trains go past certain points unless you are at Horseshoe Curve. Find out what railway company owns the crossing and look at their website.

  2. Whistle use is mandated and regulated by federal law.

You are wise to check before you buy if it bothers you, we constantly get calls from people that buy property near a railroad track and then complain about the whistle.

As an engineer I can promise I wojud much rather not have to blow the whistle so darn much but if we dont, we are subject to severe discipline.

Ask your prospective neighbors, they should be able to give you a good idea. or call the nearest railroad and ask to talk to any trainmaster, they can tell you how many trains a day you can expect.

  3. Find out which rail operator runs the trains. Then ask if you can see a copy of the working timetable.

If there is a level crossing or junction nearby then the trains will certainly whistle as they approach. Also if there are signals.

Worth checking with the City Hall to see if there are any byelaws restricting the hours when trains can use horns, whistles etc.

Trains have to have audible warning - in the US a horn or whistle, and bell - for safety reasons. The train must sound its bell and horn on entering and leaving a station and must sound the horn at other points e.g. as above.

It might be inconvenient to have the train horn sound at certain times but it's a small price to pay for safety, and remember, you might like to get some sleep sometimes but safety can't afford to.

  4. Look up the name of the train in the yellow pages and call them...they might have an answering services that will give you all of the stop points.
