How can i find the serial number fo my 1989 40 hp mercury 4 cylinder outboard?

it has a sticker but it damaged and i can't read what it says

  1. There is a silver welsh plug on the engine that has the serial number stamped into it.It is located either on the side or the top of the block under the cowling.Hope this helps.
