How can i fix my cd player?

I bought this hp laptop a year ago. About a month ago it the cd player stopped working. That is to say that the icon still appeared under my computer but it could not detect any cd i put in and gave up spinning it in about 2 secounds. I am running vista and i made sure that i had the latest driver installed.

So i brought it in to best buy and the geek squad guy put his flash drive in the computer and fixed it by creating a new registry or something like that. Anyway it worked for about a month but now its broken again. Does anyone know what it means to create a new registry and how i could do it so i dont have to go back to best buy?

The shortest answer here will be to advice you to re-install Vista if you need to do it yourself. Otherwise it looks like you will have to make another trip to the"Geek squad guy" at BestBuy.
