First off im s. america. i have a location which needs a ceiling put in, the walls r concrete old and ugly. i want to drywall everything the walls are not exactly even they have parts that stick out further than others. the dimensions r, The 2 long walls are 33 feet long, the 2 short walls are 12 1/2 feet wide and would like an 8 foot ceiling.

i can give up on the ceiling if it is too unrealistic and install one of those office square insert ceilings that are real popular here.

as far as the walls i have read i need to put on furring strips. should i frame the wall first and how. how can i make the ceiling frame. will i need extra and/or expensive tools to do so. i have a handy man type guy working the job w/ me hes done all the electrical and plumbing just this sheetrocking idea is new to him. Thank you ahead of time

  1. framing is pretty easy and if you can swing a hammer, you can build a wall.  Standard drywall comes in 4'X8' sheets so you want to imagine putting your drywall on your frames walls while you are building them.  You need to measure 16" from the edge of the wall.  That is the center of your next stud.  Mark off every 16" along your wall (16, 32, 48, etc) and put a stud in the center of that mark.  Make sure you secure your framed walls to the floor and the cement walls and put in insulation and vapor barrier on outside walls.  Your drywall should now fit into place with the drywall edges on the centers of the studs.  s***w into place ,tape, mud, sand, and mud and sand until you have a nice smooth surface.  I've added a few websites to help guide you as well.  Hope that helps

  2. Yes, rough framing is the right way to do this.  Standard 16 " centers, baseplate, anchor it to the wall with sheilds, lags and angle brackets.  Make sure it is plumb, square and level.  Make sure you can nail the drywall in the corners.

  3. idealy you need to build a frame that sits away from the wall enough to build in a straight line which can be boarded to apply a finish and the ceiling can be sat on top of the famework . insulation can be put between the frame and the wall . be carefull of damp penetration from the outside. hope this helps
